                             Introduction

The list of Wolpe's known compositions is not near complete; and some of the years of composition I do not know. I would be thankful for any additional information that anyone reading this page might be able to give me.

Submissions for additional references, recordings and reviews of them will also be greatly appreciated and added to this page, with acknowledgement.

NB All umlauted vowels in German are indicated in a traditional convention of simply following the vowel with an 'e'. This avoids difficulties of browser and terminal capabilities regarding fonts.

Solo Piece for Trumpet in 2 parts
   TRUMPET IN OUR TIME
   DCD-148
   Program Notes:

The German composer Stefan Wolpe moved to the United States in 1938,
living in New York City until his death in 1972. Solo Piece for
Trumpet was premiered in 1966 by trumpeter Ronald Anderson. A more
substantial work had been planned, but the composer's failing health
prevented this, and the result was this two and a half minute solo.
Interestingly, part two of the piece calls for trumpet in F alto, an
obsolete instrument even in 1966, but permits performance on B-flat
trumpet with the subsequent transposition up a perfect fourth. This
more frequently performed B-flat trumpet alternative is presented on
this recording, while on a recent Wolpe CD by the Parnassus ensemble,
Mr. Mase uses a four valve flugelhorn to realize this movement in its
   original tessitura.
