This view from the Snowbird Lodge shows Lake Santeetlah. Our house is located at the base of this mountain.
About Us... The Roost is twenty acres in the mountain forests of Graham County, North Carolina. Two thirds of the county is National Forest so there is a lot of nature to enjoy. We are remote - there are three traffic lights in the entire county and not a four-lane road to be found. Sadly the outside world is slowly encroaching. The new Cherohala Skyway, North Carolina's newest scenic highway, is only a mile from our house.

Nancy and I have been getting closer to nature since we relocated here from south Florida in 1991. We grow most of our own food, have a flock of chickens for fresh eggs and friers, and play in our flower gardens most of the year. For vacations we drive three or four miles to Joyce Kilmer and Slickrock Wilderness. A short hike and we're on a mountaintop or at a secluded waterfall.

Our family includes six dogs. WonTon is a chow-mix, Iggy a pure husky, Judge Ito a chow-Norweigan elkhound mix, Narvik a pure Norweigan elkhound, and the latest additions, 2K and her brother Rocky, were found abandoned at the dumpsters in March of 1999 .... they appear to have a lot of husky in them.OUR FAMILY PHOTOS-CLICK HERE

We've had some seven cats, but are down to two at present. Cracker, our ten year old cockatiel moved from Florida with us. We had two pigs our first year here. We named them Barbie and Que and they attained the ripe old age of four months before we could take no more and turned them into prime pork ..... they were delicious. HOW WE GOT THE PIGS - OINK HERE

And of course there are the 80 chickens, but that is a long, long story. HOW WE GOT THE CHICKENS - CLUCK HERE
