   Mr. Pleskow writes:

"Written in the Summer of 1967, Pieces for Piano formally consists of
the alternation of two characteristic segments which undergo variation
and/or development in their subsequent appearances throughout the work....
Segment I is characterized bu 'classical' phrase formations in an
asymmetrical and disjunct sybtax. Segment II by consecutive and
simultaneous presntations of elements possessing [specific] temporal
properties .... The lengths of the two segments vary greatly in their
appearances throughout the piece. The first segment is more prevelent,
so much so that the formal procedure could be described in terms of
Segment II being a ritornello reappearing with changes interspersed
in the main material (Segment I)."
