UNPUBLISHED WORKS WITHOUT OPUS NUMBERS
SKETCHES AND
ARRANGEMENTS OF HIS OWN WORKS

There is still a large collection of works and sketches, still only in MS, neither performed nor published. For details and further information on these see [Moldenhauer 1979], pp 726-745.

ARRANGEMENTS AND TRANSCRIPTIONS OF OTHER COMPOSER'S WORKS

Webern wrote orchestrations of pieces for voice and piano written by several composers; (Bach, Liszt, Schubert, Strauss, Wolf) reductions of full orchestral Chamber Symphony Op. 9 to chamber ensemble, by Arnold Schoenberg, piano transcriptions of Schoenberg's orchestral songs Op. 8, and a two piano transcriptions of Schoenberg's Five Orchestral Pieces Op. 16. Perhaps the most famous arrangement, is that of the six voiced ricercare from Bach's Musical Offering (1935), introduced to almost every conservatory student of composition. With one instrument to each voice, a selection of disparate timbres (fl, ob, Ehn, cln, bcln, bn, hn, trp, tmb, timp., hp, str) is used to isolate and fragment the lines into their smallest meaningful musical substructures. Another notable (presumably still in MS) is a piano transcription of Paganiniana Op. 65 by Alfredo Casella. See [Moldenhauer 1979], pp 746-749, for a list.
